Cocktail bar in London financial district

The cocktail bar "The Crosse Keys" in London is a large, impressive pub that belongs to the well-known J D Wetherspoon chain and is located in the heart of the financial district, the so-called City of London. It is housed in a former bank building of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, designed and opened in 1913 by the architect W. Campbell Jones. The name of the pub is reminiscent of a historic inn of the same name that stood nearby since the 1550s, with its origins traced back to the "Keys of Heaven," traditionally associated with Saint Peter. This original "Crosse Keys" was a significant coaching inn used by Shakespeare's theater troupe, the Chamberlain's Men, for performances, before being destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was later rebuilt, burned down again in 1734, and rebuilt once more, becoming a bustling hub for over 40 coaches daily in the early 19th century.

Historic pubs in London

The current building impresses with its architecture: high coffered ceilings, marble columns, and a Victorian Baroque facade give it a majestic atmosphere, reminding of its past as a bank. The interior is huge – large enough to accommodate a fleet of double-decker buses – and offers a variety of seating, including tables in the main room and quieter alcoves in a balcony area at the back, from where one can observe the hustle and bustle below. This size is a great advantage in the busy City, where space is often limited, making it a place where one can find a seat even during peak times. The decor is functional but with a touch of historical charm, with old wooden barrels on the ceiling recalling the time of beer storage.

Wetherspoon pub with great atmosphere

The drinks offering is typical of Wetherspoon pubs: an impressive selection of real ales, regularly expanded at beer festivals – such as the 12-day event in spring with up to 30 different ales. Favorites include craft beers like Punk IPA or Theakston's Old Peculiar, as well as international options like Italian Poretti. Cocktails play a minor role but are available, including simple classics that can be quickly served – a convenient offering in a pub designed for high volumes of visitors. The offering is complemented by wines, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages, with prices remarkably affordable for central London standards. Many dishes also include a drink in the price, making the visit even more attractive.

Traditional British pub dishes

Culinarily, The Crosse Keys offers an extensive menu of traditional British pub dishes. Popular options include Fish and Chips, Pies like Steak & Ale, and Burgers served in generous portions. There are also lighter alternatives like salads, as well as vegetarian and vegan options to cater to a wide audience. The kitchen is designed for speed and consistency, with solid quality without claiming gourmet status. Special promotions like "Steak Tuesday" or "Curry Thursday" offer affordable combinations of food and drink that are popular with regulars. The breakfast offering includes classics like a full English breakfast, often available for less than £5.

A haven. When the people of Leadenhall insist you won't find anywhere open round here or for food and it's only 7pm... Fabulous interior. Interesting use of football Nets on the ceiling. Couldn't decide if it was to catch falling pieces or keep pigeons out.

Good quality pub food at good prices. Very quick service. Either order at the bar or QR code at your table. Wide choice on the menu. Would go again. Lots of tables inside.

This was our first visit to this Pub. It is a spacious pub with some interesting features. There was a safety issue with loose carpet on the stairs to the lover level where the toilets are located. My husband thought the toilet facilities were posh but I experienced some problems with the female facilities. However the facilities were clean. There are separate small dining rooms which allow for a quieter and intimate conversation. Unfortunately it didn't happen in our case. The service was minimal and the food wasn't great because it bordered on the luke warm scale. I have visited so many Witherspoon's over the years and I must say that the standards are not the same.

It's a Wetherspoons, so lots of real ales at very low prices, and similarly excellent value food, in grand surroundings with marble columns. And it's even cheaper on a Wednesday for some reason. You may need a degree in economics to understand what exactly you will be expected to pay on the day/time, but expect it to be at least 40% cheaper than other pubs in London (except other Wetherspoons).

Enjoyed an evening with friends, the place is really nice. The beautiful building was a high street bank earlier, remained good under pub’s management. Service was nice. I gave full star for the app for ordering. I would recommend this place.

I popped into this imposing establishment one Friday afternoon recently. It's huge! I understand that it used to be the headquarters of the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, but in fact it has an even longer and illustrious history, starting life as a famous coaching inn in the 1550s! On the afternoon I went there it was already quite full of early weekend drinkers and diners. I found a large table at the rear of the place behind the impressive circular bar and then went up to the bar to order a pint of Greene King IPA and a plate of chicken wings with a small pot of spicy sauce. Delicious. I later spied a low table with two comfortable sofas and moved over there to enjoy a second pint of beer - this time Abbott ale. I then proceeded to enjoy the busy atmosphere and do some important people watching. All good.
